You Better Watch Your Ads With the New Google +1 System

Now that Google has its own Social Network (Google+) they also have more places to show your ads – other than on other people’s keyword targeted blogs and sites that display Adsense Ads. You might think this is a good thing because your ads will get more exposure and maybe it is – but don’t you target your ads to a specific keyword, or geographic area, or age preference, etc.?

All that targeting you set up is gone when your ad gets displayed in Google+ the first time someone clicks on it.  Probably that first person is your target market (hopefully) but after they click the +1 button, all their friends will see it.  And friends are likely to be curious as to what you’re looking at – even if they’re not trying to quit smoking, or lose weight, or buy gifts, etc. And that’s where your Adwords marketing could get a lot more expensive, with less sales in your pocket.

Think about it. If you’re reading someone’s Facebook page and they put link on it to something they found interesting – or they “like” someone’s comment, aren’t you just a little curious?  Don’t you want to check it out too?  Well if curiosity just got the best of you and you click on that ad, even if you’re not really interested in the item, it’ll cost that advertiser their regular PPC bid fee.

To me it doesn’t seem right. Advertisers should have a chance to opt-out of places they do not want to advertise in. At this time, that option does not exist.  Well, there is a form you can fill out, but good luck getting it to successfully be sent to anyone. It still has a few problems and apparently “they’re working on it!”

What do you think? Is this a good thing for Advertisers or is it just a good thing for “someone else.”  We’re interested in your opinion – feel free to comment below.
